Experimental and Micro Surgery

Kirstin Atrott

The Center for Preclinical Development provides researchers with modern, fully equipped operating rooms for the performance of advanced experimental procedures in rats and mice with a strong focuss on microsurgical applications.

Microsurgical Operating Room for rats

The rat operating room provides two fully equipped operating stations, allowing procedures to be performed in parallel. Each station is equipped with a high-quality microsurgical operating microscope, providing ideal conditions for complex microsurgical procedures. For anesthesia, each operating station is equipped with modern inhalation anesthesia systems, including:

  • Isoflurane vaporizer

  • Activated charcoal filter for the safe removal of anesthetic gases

  • Oxygen supply

For optimal temperature control during procedures, each operating station is equipped with an animal warming pad, which helps maintain animal well-being and contributes to the stabilization of physiological parameters.

Microsurgical Operating Room for mice

The operating room, specifically designed for use with mice, features three operating stations, providing ideal conditions for conducting parallel experimental studies and enabling efficient use of the research infrastructure. Each operating station is equipped with inhalation anesthesia and patient monitoring as well as heating infrastructure equivalent to the operating stations for rats.

Shared Equipment

A dedicated bay for induction of anesthesia, enabling the safe and efficient preparation of animals prior to procedures is available in both operating rooms.

The basic equipment includes:

  • Animal clippers for preoperative preparation

  • Precision balances for weight monitoring

  • Refrigerator/freezer combination for the storage of samples and materials

In addition, the Center for Preclinical Development provides a selection of consumables free of charge for use in the operating rooms, supporting the efficient execution of scientific research projects.

Use of the Facilities

Following an introduction to the facilities and equipment, and once the appropriate access has been granted, the operating rooms are available for independent use by researchers.
